CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Aqua
Age: 18
Canon: Kingdom Hearts
Canon Point: Seconds before she is found by Mickey in the Realm of Darkness, during A Fragmentary Passage
Character Information: Aqua on KHWiki
Personality:
Aqua is, quite simply, a hero through and through. She’s strong of heart and will, brave, selfless to a fault, and always strives to do the right thing. Her morality never wavers, she is patient and calm, and is willing to offer her assistance at the drop of a hat, be it to help deal with an Unversed infestation on a ship or beating a group of rowdy Unversed at a game of Fruit Ball to clear the court.
Her friends are the most important thing in the world to her, and she believes in both Terra and Ven and loves them with all her heart. At times her concerns for their well being caused some friction, but she values them dearly to her core, and will do anything to help them. The bond and love she has for her friends gives her heart great strength, and even in the darkest of moments gives her the will to press on without faltering.
Aqua has taken the teachings of Master Eraqus to heart, believing fully in the power of light and considering darkness as a corrupting influence best left alone. When asked by Eraqus to keep an eye on Terra for the sake of monitoring the risk of him succumbing to darkness even a little bit, she agreed to, although she also held great faith that Terra will prove to be stronger than the influence of darkness. Her faith in her morals is unwavering, believing firmly in the goodness of light and her duty to beat back the darkness wherever she may encounter it.
Her willingness to help others is very clear throughout her story: she asked to try on the glass slipper left behind by Cinderella despite knowing it would not fit to stall for time, she offered her assistance with the Unversed onboard the ship in Deep Space without a second thought, and, most notably, she sacrificed herself to save Terra from falling into the Realm of Darkness, an action that had many consequences later. She does not hesitate to put herself in danger should it mean protecting others.
This tendency is so strong it’s easily described as self-sacrificing: Aqua will put others’ safety before her own, even if it’s against all reason. This is most evident with her friends, throwing herself in front of a fireball to protect Ven, or sacrificing herself to ensure that Terra, possessed by Xehanort, is not trapped in the Realm of Darkness. Still, it’s not just limited to them; Aqua has prevented allies from joining her in battle to keep them safe from powerful opponents, and willingly steps between Ansem the Wise and a member of the True Organization XIII even while unarmed. This isn’t out of a sense of self-destruction; Aqua simply wants to protect others from harm.
She possesses a caring, sisterly, almost maternal streak nearly a mile-wide. Aqua was the one who spent her time watching over the comatose Ven when he first arrived at the Land of Departure, and was the first to know when he awoke. While in Neverland, after accidentally becoming the leader of an expedition, rather than disappoint the Lost Boys by declining and thus canceling the expedition (as stated by the rules of Peter Pan: whoever picked up the map first is the leader, no exceptions) Aqua chose to take part. She bonded quickly with Kairi upon meeting the girl in Radiant Garden, jumping to protect her and keep her out of danger, and her encounter with the young Sora and Riku in Destiny Islands had her encouraging them to take care of each other much like an older sister would, despite only just meeting them.
At times this protectiveness can be overbearing and even restricting. Her insistence on Ven staying out of danger despite his ability to handle himself caused frustrations between the two, and her phrasing of her concerns for Terra’s actions was poor, leading him to believe she thought him unable to handle his own darkness. While a large part of her pushing Ven to return home had to do with Eraqus’s telling her that he needed to stay in the Land of Departure, part of it was her own belief that it was in the boy’s best interest. This is clearest when, in Neverland, she objected to Peter Pan’s pushing of the Lost Boys to fly far higher than they were comfortable with; while after she admitted it had been good for them to push their boundaries, initially Aqua was against forcing the boys into a situation that they would be uncomfortable with.
Aqua is not quick to anger, keeping a level head in nearly all situations. However, threatening her friends will not be tolerated or allowed to pass. The few times she truly showed anger, it was always in response to taunts and threats directed at her friends. Even then her anger presents itself as sharp words rather than aggression, as even though she engaged in combat immediately afterwards, in both instances the battle would have occurred regardless.
Her time spent trapped in the Realm of Darkness has given her a somber edge. Aqua has endlessly wandered a world where time has no meaning, not knowing how long she’s been there or if she’ll ever escape. The ever-present darkness pressing in on her heart has finally found some cracks. The loneliness has led her to speak out loud to herself often, and to wonder at the meanings of things she encounters in the twisted world.
Overall, Aqua is a kind, good-hearted young woman, determined to do the right thing, and putting others before herself. Though she may not consider herself one, Aqua is a heroine to her core, and she will always strive to do the right thing.
